Jason and Gwen Barnes' Honeymoon to Australia
Day 8

July 16, 2004

This morning we slept in and then ran errands. #1 -- Post office to get stamps and mail postcards home. #2 -- Do laundry (~$4/load). And the washers looked just like the ones at Deerfield. #3 -- Lunch, while doing laundry. I found a yummy bread place in the same shopping mall. I had a yummy ham & cheese croissant for lunch.

We spent the beginning of the day at Gantheaume Point (originally thought to be an island by Admiral Gantheaume when he found it), where there is a lighthouse.

Down in the surf it is possible to see fossilized dinosaur tracks at the correct tide. It wasn't the right tide, so this is rather a replica that is more easily accessible.

When the laundry was done we crashed at the hotel for a couple of hours. then we went to the beach at ~3:30 (the sun would set at 5:30). We drove out onto the beach past a lot of totally naked people. They were brown all over, so they must do this a lot. We finally stopped where we had 150m of beach to ourselves. We pulled out our chairs, tolels, and books, and then hit the water. It was cool but not frigid, so after a little while we headed back to base and read books for awhile, and then headed back out. I noticed that the sand here wasreally fine -- more like clay than sand. I tried to make a castle, but it retained too much water and turned into more of a sand pancake. The sunset was good, of course, and I realize how much I miss the beach. I get a measure of peace and tranquility from it that I don't know how to get any other way.

This is one a jellyfish-looking thing. Are these the ones that sting? We didn't know, but avoided the minefield.

Camel rides were all booked up so we didn't take one, but this one went by us along the beach.

This dog was totally insane, chasing cars along the beach all afternoon.

By the time it was dark we were hungry, so we headed for the Kimberley Kitchen, a pizza parlor. The wait was long, but when it was done it was good -- I really liked their handmade crust. Egg-onion-bacon-tom sauce --- very yummy.
