Jason and Gwen Barnes' Honeymoon to Australia
Day 11

July 19, 2004

Our hotel room was very cold. The alarm started going off at 6AM, but being cold and tired we didn't get up until 7AM (local). I discovered that snuggling close to Jason kept me warm enough to be able to sleep, so getting out of bed into the cold was torture.

After a gas stop, we hit the road for KAtherine. I drove for the first stretch to Turkey Creek where we stopped for "pastys".
Jason to the store clerk: "What's a pasty (paste-ee)?"
Clerk: "Pasty (pah-stee)?"
Jason: "Yeah, a pah-stee."
Clerk: "Well they are filled with meat, vegetables . . . Don't you have pastys?"
Jason: "Well, no, not like this."
They remind me of hot pockets, but I figure that wouldn't mean anything to the girl.
Clerk #2: "Where are you from?"
Jason: "America."
These pastys were actually pretty clever. They are desgned specifically for selling in roadhouses like this. They keep them in a heated glass case on the counter. They are in a cellophane bag that is riddled with holes, presumably so that steam can escape and keep the pasty from getting soggy while sitting there hot.

We ate the pastys while Jason drove; then I slept a bit. By Kununurra Jason was getting tired, too, so we stopped to walk around a bit and get cokes. Then Jason drove to the Victoria River Inn where we got gas. Oh, and just before that we stopped briefly and the Kuwang Lookout. It wasn't very spectacular, but it did let us look over the tree tops to some hills in the distance.

I drove from Victoria River to Katherine. We checked into the Katherine river Lodge and then went to Starvin' for dinner. Hurrah! A real restaurant, not a hotel or roadhouse. We slit a Caesar Salad, Fetuccine w/chicken in white wine sauce, and carmel cheesecake.
